AI at the U.S. Open: Transforming Tennis Viewing Experience

At the U.S. Open, technology is transforming tennis matches into a digital spectacle. AI-generated insights are now a fixture of the tournament experience, offering fans and players a new perspective on the game.

AI Integration in Tennis

During matches, AI insights are seamlessly integrated into the U.S. Open app. For instance, when Coco Gauff competed against Zeynep Sönmez, AI provided real-time analysis, including predictions on players’ chances to win and a new metric referred to as ‘serve quality.’ This data is collected through cameras surrounding Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York, which capture details like limb movement and serve preparation.

“Gauff’s winning serves had a controlled racket preparation and deep knee bend,” the serve quality summary noted, highlighting the intricate details captured by the system.

Data Processing and Insights

IBM’s Watsonx software processes data points such as elbow and knee flexion to assess serve performance. By the end of the tournament, over a billion data points will be accumulated, providing a rich source of information for fans and players alike.

Tyler Sidell, IBM’s technical program director for sports partnerships, emphasized the unpredictability of sports. He noted that while analysis can provide insights, the dynamic nature of tennis keeps the excitement alive.

Utilization by Players

Players, including Jessica Pegula, utilize AI for strategic advantage. Pegula uses AI to analyze serve patterns, recognizing the serve as a pivotal component in the game.

“Tennis involves problem-solving, and understanding serve patterns is crucial,” she explained.

Even as gameplay evolves, players can adapt using instinct in conjunction with data analytics.

Fan Experience Enhancement

The U.S. Open app offers features like ‘likelihood to win,’ allowing fans to track player odds in real-time. This feature has been available for six years, and it utilizes media sources and recent performances for analysis. During Gauff’s match, her chances of winning improved significantly as she gained momentum in the first set.

A men’s match between Alexander Zverev and Lorenzo Sonego demonstrated the unpredictable nature of sports. Odds fluctuated dramatically based on match progress, showcasing the dynamic assessment capabilities of AI.

Another app feature, ‘key moments,’ offers insights during games. For instance, it described pressure situations with dramatic analyses, enhancing viewer engagement.

AI-Powered Assistant

Match Chat, an AI assistant within the app, provides information on players, matches, and venues. It efficiently helps fans by answering queries, such as finding the nearest bar for the signature Honey Deuce cocktail.

AI technologies at the U.S. Open are revolutionizing how fans experience and interact with tennis, offering deeper engagement with the sport.
