William Pulte, the Acting Director of National Intelligence, stated on Sunday that his office has completed a fourth phase of workforce reductions. Pulte emphasized that these layoffs were part of a strategy to streamline the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, aligning it more closely with its primary mission.

In a social media post, Pulte remarked, “Since becoming Acting Director of National Intelligence, our team has been smartly, and carefully, reducing the size of [the Office of the Director of National Intelligence], re-focusing ODNI on national security, the law, and the statute. As of this evening, we just finished a 4th round of thoughtful, measured layoffs. Thank you!”

Pulte succeeded Tulsi Gabbard, who stepped down from the role last month to care for her husband, diagnosed with bone cancer. Before Pulte’s appointment, he served as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. President Donald Trump appointed Pulte to this interim DNI position. Trump announced that U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton would be the nominee for permanent DNI.

In a past interview, Trump indicated his belief that the ODNI was oversized and redundant. He had expressed this sentiment to Pulte, suggesting that some staff members were unnecessary. Trump hoped the acting director would initiate downsizing efforts.

In another July post, Pulte mentioned, “U.S. National Intelligence is operating more efficiently and effectively than ever before, and today, we started a third round of reducing redundant, or non-critical, personnel. DNI’s future is exceptionally bright, and will be focused on following the law and the statute.” Recognizing the opportunity given to him by Trump, Pulte shared gratitude for the president’s support since assuming his role.
