Bassmaster Elite Series Closes at St. Lawrence River
The Bassmaster Elite at the St. Lawrence River closed out the 2026 Elite Series regular season with the Angler of the Year and Rookie of the Year titles on the line. The awards are decided based on cumulative points across the nine regular-season events.
Evan Kung’s name graced the tournament trophy, but Trey McKinney was the center of a larger story.
Trey McKinney’s Triumph
Trey McKinney finally broke through this season, reversing past runner-up positions to win the Angler of the Year title. At 21, McKinney is the youngest recipient of this award, surpassing the record held by Kevin VanDam since 1992. This accolade was the highlight of a week where he also achieved the heaviest five-fish smallmouth limit ever recorded.
Despite finishing second in the tournament, McKinney’s focus was always on the Angler of the Year. His determination was unyielding, leading to a crucial 6-pound catch that secured his title. McKinney credits his success to three years of hard work, supported by his family and peers.
Caleb Hudson: Rookie of the Year
While McKinney was competing, Rookie of the Year was decided from the shore. Caleb Hudson, leading the points race all season, held onto his title despite not fishing on Championship Sunday. Fisher Anaya needed a top-six finish to surpass Hudson; however, he placed ninth, allowing Hudson to clinch the title.
“It’s been the most nerve-wracking day,” Hudson shared, highlighting his relief and joy as he watched events unfold from the shoreline.
Hudson received a $10,000 bonus check from Pro Guide Batteries, marking the achievement as a gift for his mother’s birthday.
Rookie Race Drama
Anaya’s chase for the Rookie of the Year came with challenges, losing significant catches early in the day. Despite the setback, Anaya expressed pride in his season and admiration for Hudson’s victory.
Emerging Stars in the Sport
The season finale at St. Lawrence River highlighted new stars in the sport, showcasing McKinney’s and Hudson’s promising futures. These narratives signal a shift in competitive bass fishing, with emerging talents poised to influence the sport’s landscape.
