On the night of September 11, 2001, Chris Hauri and her neighbors gathered around a firepit in River Forest. They reflected on the tragic events that unfolded earlier that day. Feeling a strong urge to contribute positively to their community, they conceived the idea of LemonAid—a block-wide lemonade stand aimed at supporting local charities. Since then, LemonAid has become a staple in the area, raising funds for charities in River Forest and surrounding communities.
On Friday, attendees celebrated the 25th anniversary of September 11 by participating in LemonAid’s final event at the 700 block of Bonnie Brae. Despite its success, this year marks the last LemonAid due to the workload involved and some original members stepping down. Chris Hauri, a co-founder, expressed immense pride in witnessing young participants grow up with philanthropy at heart, understanding the impact of their kindness.
In its initial year, LemonAid managed a modest setup with one or two tables serving fresh lemonade, raising approximately $400 for Hephzibah Children’s Association in Oak Park. Over time, the event evolved into a large-scale community gathering, ultimately raising over $700,000 for various causes. This year, funds were allocated to nearly 30 charities they supported in previous editions.
Participants from the early years have assumed leadership roles, coordinating essential tasks like public relations and beneficiary liaison. LemonAid’s legacy remains strong; for instance, donations from 2021 helped the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society sponsor a medical exam room outfitted with cutting-edge equipment.
LemonAid showed what the community can achieve through collective effort, embodying the true essence of unity and support.
The day also marked a solemn remembrance ceremony for the September 11 attacks. Oak Park community and officials gathered at Fire Station 1 to honor those affected by the events. They rang a bell and read names of safety officials who perished, highlighting their sacrifices. Chief Shatonya Johnson underscored the importance of coming together and prioritizing the safety of others.
