Rhodes Retains WWE Championship Amid Controversial Decision

Controversial officiating is not exclusive to major sports leagues like the NFL or NBA. It affected the Undisputed WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther, which took place on Sunday at Clash in Italy. Referee Dan Engler made a questionable call that impacted the match’s outcome.

In a pivotal moment, Rhodes executed a second Cross Rhodes on Gunther, leaving him close to the ropes. As Rhodes pinned Gunther, the referee initiated the count. Footage from the broadcast clearly showed Gunther’s foot under the ropes, which should have interrupted the count.

However, Engler did not notice Gunther’s positioning. He continued to count, allowing Rhodes to secure the three count and retain his championship. Gunther, surprised by the decision, rolled out of the ring, repeatedly indicating to Engler that his foot was under the rope during the pin count.

WWE events are known for their intensity and unpredictable moments, and this match added to that history.

Rhodes enjoyed the victory, celebrating with fans at the Inalpi Arena in Turin. Meanwhile, Gunther made his exit, visibly displeased with the call. This marked Rhodes’ second title defense after he captured the belt from Drew McIntyre earlier that month.

Gunther earned his match against Rhodes by defeating Royce Keys two weeks ago. Initially hesitant to sign the match contract, Gunther decided to compete when Keys threatened to take his chance away.

Since then, Gunther has frequently accused Rhodes of centering “Friday Night SmackDown” around himself. With the recent controversy, Gunther has fresh grounds for discontent regarding the match’s conclusion.

It remains uncertain when Gunther will have another chance at winning the title.
