Suspect in Hawaii Charged with Murder and Multiple Offenses

Authorities have charged Jacob Baker, 36, of Pahoa, Hawaii, with murder and nearly a dozen other criminal offenses. The charges include one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder for a triple homicide on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Additional charges against Baker encompass multiple counts of burglary, criminal property damage, theft, and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. He remains in custody without bond, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Baker’s arrest followed a manhunt involving local and federal authorities. Law enforcement had described him as “armed and extremely dangerous.” The killings occurred over a period of two days, authorities shared.

The victims were identified as Robert Shine, 69, John Carse, 69, and another 79-year-old man, whose identity hasn’t been released. Police discovered Shine’s body partially submerged in a cement pond close to the 79-year-old victim’s location. Carse was found about 19 miles away.

Authorities apprehended Baker in Kalapana, roughly 10 miles from Pahoa. Reports indicated surveillance footage captured a man resembling Baker hiding in a vacant lot. Witnesses mentioned spotting a man “repeatedly ducking down as passing traffic approached.” Ultimately, police found him in a small cave next to the lot.

Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna did not disclose how Baker was identified or his possible motives. Investigators have yet to find connections among the victims, apart from geographical proximity between two of them.
