Senator Cory Booker expressed concerns on Sunday regarding Graham Platner, the presumptive Democratic nominee for the Senate in Maine, due to reports of Platner engaging in sexual messaging outside his marriage. During an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Booker acknowledged worries that Platner’s personal issues might affect Democrats’ chances of securing a crucial Senate seat. Booker stated, “Yeah, I have concerns. That guy has questions to answer. And that’s what campaigns are for.”
Booker emphasized the importance of Democrats gaining Senate control, citing the need for a counterbalance to the current president, whom he suggested was inflating health care, child care, and gas prices.
Platner has been known for his progressive campaign in Maine, which has sparked a movement. However, his personal history, including controversial online comments about women, has heightened Democratic concerns about the race. Reports surfaced that Platner’s wife had previously informed his campaign about his communications with other women, prompting Senate Republicans to highlight the issue to attack Platner.
Among Democrats, Booker’s unease was notable. He is viewed as a potential 2028 presidential contender following his previous candidacy. The Platner campaign has not responded to Booker’s remarks.
Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey expressed that he was not focused on the Maine race and had never met Platner. Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Kim stated, “I will work with whoever the people of Maine elect. But I hope that they elect somebody that is going to stand up to this president.”
