The lifeless body of a humpback whale was pulled onto a Danish beach Saturday, ending a saga that held Germany in its grip for months. The whale repeatedly found itself stranded in the Baltic Sea.
Knicknamed “Timmy” and “Hope,” the whale gained significant media attention throughout its ordeal. German outlets frequently updated the public with live blogs and alerts since it was first sighted near the German coast on March 3.
Sadly, the whale’s journey concluded on May 14 when it was discovered dead near Anholt, a small island in the Kattegat. This strait links the Baltic Sea to the North Sea.
This marks the end of an extensive rescue mission. Efforts to guide the whale back to the Atlantic Ocean culminated on May 2. On that day, it was transported toward the North Sea on a barge.
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency plans to examine the carcass next week. The aim is to determine the cause of death.
Danish news outlet “News5” broadcasted the event live as the whale’s body was pulled ashore. A cable attached to a truck facilitated the operation.
Experts are uncertain why the whale entered the Baltic Sea. Some suggest it might have been following a shoal of herring or migrating.
