Choosing healthy meals at fast-food restaurants is challenging, but not impossible. Some meals are lower in calories or contain more vitamins and minerals, offering better options for health-conscious consumers. However, according to Dr. Kristin Struble, a functional medicine pediatrician, ‘nutritious’ might be an overstatement concerning these options.
Popular Fast-Food Options
Taco Bell’s Veggie Mexican Pizza topped a recent list for nutritious fast food. Many experts advise avoiding highly processed items like bread and tortillas used in these meals. Dr. Struble explained that although it is vegetarian, the Veggie Mexican Pizza may lead to hunger soon after eating due to its low protein content.
In contrast, Chick-fil-A Grilled Nuggets paired with the Kale Crunch Salad and a Fruit Cup offer a healthier alternative. Dr. Lauren Powell, practicing in Georgia, emphasizes caution with salad dressings, which can include oils and preservatives affecting overall nutritional value.
Burgers Without Buns
McDonald’s, Five Guys, and In-N-Out cheeseburgers made it to the top 10 list when served without buns. As long as the meat is not overly processed, these options can provide protein, fat, and a small amount of lettuce.
Chipotle’s Menu Options
Chipotle is known for protein-centric menu items with healthy fats. It provides options like beans, particularly black beans, that add fiber. Avoiding processed carbohydrates like tortillas, chips, and white rice can enhance the nutritional aspects of a meal at Chipotle. Salsa and vegetables serve as sources of vitamins and micronutrients, with guacamole offering fiber and healthy fats.
Travel and Fast Food
Dr. Powell suggests stopping at grocery stores for healthy food choices when traveling, offering a chance for exercise absent in drive-thru visits. Struble warns against the addictive, chemically-laden products often found in fast-food chains, stressing that many so-called healthy options, including protein shakes, can be misleading due to high sugar content and processing.
When possible, packing food ahead ensures healthier eating. And if fast food becomes necessary, remind yourself it’s a one-time indulgence.
