Emily Tilton Shines in Defense Role for Naperville Central

Emily Tilton transitioned to defense last season when Naperville Central coach Troy Adams moved her from forward. Adams aimed to strengthen the back line with Tilton’s speed and adaptability, traits honed from her indoor track experience. Though defenders often operate outside the spotlight, Adams emphasized her importance, saying, “Defenders don’t get credit unless they score. Outside backs never get any credit. But she’s legit.”

Tilton has faced top state players in her sophomore season. Her recent challenge was marking Benet senior forward Annie Fitzgerald during the Class 3A Naperville Central Sectional championship. Adams explained, “Tilton marked her most of the game unless Fitzgerald moved to midfield, where Nicole Smith picked her up. That’s two or three girls in a row Emily’s marked, all of top talent.” Adams praised Tilton’s maturity, predicting a bright college future due to her underrated skill set.

The championship match saw Naperville Central triumph over Benet with a 1-0 victory. Emerson Burke’s penalty goal secured the win, maintaining the team’s unbeaten status with a 20-0-1 record. The Redhawks, having recorded their 16th shutout, will face Wheaton Warrenville South next. Benet, the third seed, experienced their first shutout of the season, ending at 19-3.

Fitzgerald acknowledged the challenging match, stating, “Both teams knew this would be tough. I’m proud of how everyone played.” She extended best wishes to Naperville Central, recognizing them as a strong, well-coached team. Tilton echoed the competitive nature of the game, focusing on preventing Benet’s advancement, highlighting team communication as critical to their defensive success.

Despite Naperville Central’s offensive reputation, their defense plays a key role, with Tilton garnering praise from teammates. Senior forward Malia Shen noted, “Coach Adams has a knack for developing wingers into outside backs. Emily’s soccer IQ helps her advance when needed and stay back when appropriate.”

“Guarding Annie is always challenging,” Shen said of Fitzgerald. “She’s talented, but Emily did a great job of containing without overcommitting.”

This patience was vital in the match, where the Redwings had limited offensive opportunities. Tilton emphasized avoiding fouls and providing support for offensive players, crucial to maintaining their defensive strength.

Adams also previously moved both Burke and Shen to defense, then returned them to forward roles, all sharing speed and tactical awareness. Burke praised Tilton’s development, “She was impressive last season, but she’s much more confident now. Her speed and ball-handling make her a significant asset in defense.”

Naperville Central’s balanced team strategy continues, as showcased by Burke’s record-breaking 37th goal of the season. Her scoring streak remains unbroken, apart from a weather-suspended tie. Reflecting team spirit, Burke underscored, “Scoring is enjoyable, but winning matters most. We approach every game like it’s our last.”
