The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has undergone a significant name change. It is now known as the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” This transformation occurred as new signage was revealed on Friday, December 19, 2025, in Washington.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt shared the news on social media. She announced that the center’s board voted unanimously for the change. Leavitt mentioned President Trump’s efforts in preserving the building as a reason for this decision.

The Kennedy Center’s website now reflects this update. The unveiling of the new signage followed shortly after the announcement.

However, Ohio Democrat Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex-officio board member, challenged the notion of a unanimous vote. She expressed concerns in a video, claiming her attempts to speak were muted during the voting process.

Roma Daravi, the center’s vice president of public relations, reiterated the board’s unanimous approval. According to Daravi, the rebranding showcases bipartisan support for America’s cultural center.

Yet, opposition exists among congressional Democrats. Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries stated the president lacks the legal authority to rename the institution. Federal law designates the center as a memorial to President Kennedy. Changing its name requires Congressional approval.

Earlier in the year, Trump appointed himself as the chairman of the Kennedy Center, dismissing former president Deborah Rutter. He removed board chair David Rubenstein and other members appointed by President Biden. The new board includes individuals like second lady Usha Vance and Fox News host Laura Ingraham.

During a session before hosting the Kennedy Center Honors, Trump alluded to the possible renaming but deferred to the board’s decision. He emphasized efforts to preserve the Kennedy Center.

Trump, who largely ignored the Kennedy Center during his first term, has now taken a keen interest. This includes a pledge to remove programming he finds unsuitable.

His “One Big Beautiful Bill” suggested providing $257 million for repairs and maintenance of the building.

Originally named The National Cultural Center, the venue became the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 1964. This occurred two months after President Kennedy’s assassination, under legislation signed by President Lyndon Johnson.
