Cornyn’s Defeat Reveals Trump’s Continued Influence Over GOP Base

The significant loss faced by Senator John Cornyn in a recent Texas primary runoff highlighted the changing dynamics within the Republican Party. Cornyn, once a key Republican figure, was defeated by Ken Paxton, who aligned himself with the MAGA movement. Paxton won by a substantial margin of 28 percentage points.

This outcome reflects a broader trend among Republican voters, who have increasingly turned away from established party members over the past decade in favor of candidates endorsed by former President Trump. Despite a general decline in Trump’s broader popularity, his core base remains active in primaries, contributing to several significant victories for Trump-backed candidates this month. This shift creates a more challenging landscape for Republican incumbents and provides an advantage for Democrats in upcoming elections.

Cornyn, a four-term senator, suffered a severe defeat in what was one of the most costly Senate primaries to date. In the analysis by Decision Desk HQ, no sitting senator has lost so badly in such a primary scenario since 1974. Just days earlier, another Republican, Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, also failed to secure a spot in a runoff backed by Trump. Cassidy received less than 25 percent of the vote in a four-contender race.

Both primary results emphasize the disconnect between the core Republican electorate engaged in primaries and runoff elections and GOP leaders not aligned with Trump.

The impact of Trump’s influence extended beyond the Senate, as he also contributed to the ousting of Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky in a House primary held on May 19. Trump acknowledged the difficulty of unseating incumbents in such political contests.
