Wyndham Clark’s Journey: A Victory at CJ Cup and The Road Ahead

After claiming victory in the 2023 U.S. Open, PGA Tour player Wyndham Clark seemed poised to elevate his career. However, his trajectory didn’t align with expectations. On Sunday, Clark secured the CJ Cup Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch, marking his first PGA Tour triumph since February 2024. He posted a remarkable 30-under for the tournament, surpassing Si Woo Kim by three shots.

The golf world often debates whether tournaments are won or lost. Clark’s win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson came through an astonishing 11-under 60 in the final round. He nearly holed out on the 72nd hole, which would have led to an eagle and a 59-round, a rare feat achieved by only 15 players in PGA Tour history.

Si Woo Kim started the final round with a two-shot advantage over Clark and Scottie Scheffler. Kim delivered a commendable six-under 65 but couldn’t match Clark’s exceptional performance. This was a victory Clark genuinely achieved rather than a loss on Kim’s part.

This win marks a significant rebound for Clark, who previously missed the cut at the PGA Championship earlier in the month. His previous win was in the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and he hadn’t won a 72-hole tournament since the 2023 U.S. Open.

In the months leading to this victory, Clark had demonstrated potential by winning the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a record-setting 60 during the third round. Although the final round at Pebble Beach was cut short due to rain, resulting in a 54-hole event, Clark was rightfully declared the winner.

In 2024, Clark nearly seized the PLAYERS Championship, finishing tied for second. Within a year, he clinched three titles and nearly claimed a fourth, including a major, earning him a spot on the 2023 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

The new success brought heightened expectations from both fans and Clark himself. Unfortunately, these weren’t met consistently in 2025. At 32, Clark didn’t secure any wins, achieving only two top-10 finishes in 24 tournaments. He faced setbacks like missing the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open, which led to an incident of frustration at Oakmont Country Club.

In an interview with CBS golf reporter Amanda Balionis, Clark discussed overcoming his past challenges. While left out of the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team, he secured a top-5 finish at the 2025 Open Championship. However, he missed the cut in half of his last 10 major starts, with the T4 at The Open being his only top-10 finish in a major since the 2023 U.S. Open win.

Clark’s next chance to prove himself comes at the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, commencing on June 18.
