Fatal Collision with Elephant in Uganda’s National Park

On Sunday evening, a tragic incident occurred in Murchison Falls National Park, northwestern Uganda. A vehicle traveling from Arua city to Kampala collided with an elephant. This incident resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to four others.

The vehicle involved was a Toyota Hiace minibus carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority. Upon impact with the elephant, the minibus lost control, causing the fatalities and injuries. The police, via social media, shared images of the accident scene, showing the crashed vehicle located at the side of the road. No updates were provided on the elephant’s condition.

“Motorists are strongly urged to exercise extreme caution while driving through national parks and wildlife-protected areas, especially during night hours, and to strictly observe speed limits to avoid such incidents,” stated the Uganda Police Force.

The Ugandan Wildlife Authority reinforced this warning, highlighting the frequent crossings of wild animals on roads within protected areas. This incident underlines a growing issue in Uganda—human-wildlife confrontations—as expanding populations encroach on wildlife territories. Such conflicts have been increasing in recent years.

Speeding vehicles pose a significant threat to wildlife in protected areas. In 2024, it was estimated that speeding vehicles inside Murchison Falls National Park killed about three animals daily. Car accidents remain prevalent in Uganda. The issue is not confined to Uganda alone; in December, a high-speed train in India collided with a herd of elephants, resulting in the death of seven elephants.
