Pope Leo XIV’s Call for Ethical AI

Pope Leo XIV Addresses AI Concerns

Pope Leo XIV, known for his strong positions on immigration and war, has expanded his focus to address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. Being the first American pope, he has openly challenged the influence of Silicon Valley power players. His latest papal document, titled “Magnifica Humanitas” or “Magnificent Humanity,” marks a significant theological stance on AI.

Released on Monday, this document is a major moral statement on AI from a religious leader. Pope Leo XIV aims to integrate Catholic values into a largely secular industry, which continues to change rapidly. He urges society to reflect on the direction AI technology is leading humanity.

“Crucial questions impose themselves on our conscience and can no longer be avoided: Where are we going? Toward what goal do we wish to orient ourselves? What direction should we choose as a people and as a human community?”

Call for AI Ethics

Pope Leo XIV advocates for the “disarmament” of AI, akin to the church’s stance on nuclear disarmament. He stresses freeing AI from any logic that converts it into tools of domination and exclusion. This was highlighted during his speech at the Vatican.

The launch event of the document in the synod hall had a presentation style reminiscent of brand launches. It featured vibrant yellow banners and an introductory video produced in collaboration with EWTN, an American Catholic network known for its global outreach.
