Mason Netcel’s Journey: Mindset and Skill Elevate His Game

Early Talent and Commitment

Mason Netcel, an infielder for St. Charles North High School, showcased his talent early by joining the varsity team in his freshman year. By September of his senior year, Netcel committed to Division I Indiana State, solidifying his reputation as a skilled player.

Mindset Transformation

Despite his evident talent, Netcel faced challenges with maintaining a positive mindset during difficult moments. This season, he focused on improving his mental approach to enhance his performance on the field. “I’m happier with the mental side than the stats,” Netcel stated. His main goal was to remain positive and manage adversity effectively, a lesson that has helped elevate his game.

Discussing the importance of this mental shift, Netcel said, “As a kid, I would strike out and fume about it. Learning to control that and not let it affect my field performance has been significant.”

Coaching Perspective

Coach Todd Genke praised Netcel’s growth in both leadership and maturity. “He’s grown a lot, and we’ve put a lot on him with leadership,” Genke noted. He emphasized how Netcel has learned to handle adversity better, an essential part of his development.

Genke, who experienced similar pressures as a former minor league pitcher, understands Netcel’s journey. “With talent comes expectations, and these can be burdensome. His maturity is evident now.”

Stats and Performance

Netcel’s dedication has led to a successful season. Heading into a key match against Dundee-Crown, he boasts a .320 batting average with 31 runs and 19 RBIs. His .492 on-base percentage reflects his discipline at the plate.

Genke also highlighted Netcel’s work ethic, saying, “He’s incredibly hardworking, and when talent meets coaching and drive, exceptional outcomes are possible.”

College Offers and Choices

While his talent implied abundant college offers, Netcel faced limited opportunities initially. After a year of scarce offers, he impressed at Indiana State’s camp and was offered a spot, alongside a junior college in Wisconsin.

Reflecting on the process, Netcel admitted, “It was tough seeing peers get offers while I received none initially. But loving the game and fitting well at Indiana State made the decision clear.”

Looking Ahead

Before heading to college, Netcel aims for a strong postseason with St. Charles North, maintaining optimism. “We have a great vibe going into the postseason, and I believe we can progress significantly,” Netcel said.
