IndyCar rookie Caio Collet encountered a serious crash late in the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, while Felix Rosenqvist and Pato O’Ward battled for first place. Collet lost control in Turn 2 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, causing him to overcorrect and hit the wall. His vehicle’s right rear caught fire as he skidded along the track and onto the grass.
Emergency crews quickly responded to extinguish the flames and assist Collet out of the car. Fortunately, he walked away unharmed, but race officials issued a red flag, pausing the race and allowing drivers a break before a tense conclusion in the final laps.
Collet, driving for A.J. Foyt Enterprises, did not finish the race, which impacted his position on the leaderboard. This was his debut in the Indy 500, after advancing to the NTT IndyCar Series following a second-place finish in the Indy NXT Series the previous year, where he secured three wins in 2025.
The Brazilian driver entered the race ranked 21st in the IndyCar standings with 70 points over six starts, having not yet achieved a top-10 finish in his rookie season.
The 2026 Indy 500 was notably competitive, featuring over 50 lead changes, with Felix Rosenqvist ultimately claiming victory on the final lap.
