Time magazine is under criticism for featuring Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner on the cover of its June 8 issue. The cover headline reads, “Party Crasher: The rise of scandal-plagued Democrat Graham Platner.” Platner is running in Maine’s Senate primary.
The magazine’s social media post stated, “TIME’s new cover: Even in this antiestablishment political moment, Graham Platner’s rise has been remarkable. His candidacy is forcing the party to come to terms with what it’s willing to risk in exchange for a fighter.”
Platner has been embroiled in controversies, including having a widely recognized Nazi symbol tattoo. Deleted posts attributed to him on Reddit contained offensive sexual remarks and self-identifications as a “communist” and “socialist.” He allegedly mocked a Purple Heart soldier nearly killed in combat.
The article describes Platner as an unpolished outsider favored by Democratic voters for a potential stardom. It highlights his controversial background, mentioning a DUI and hostile Reddit posts.
Conservatives criticized the cover on social media. Elizabeth Pipko, a former Trump campaign spokesperson, commented on social media, expressing skepticism over the coverage. Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller noted the historical context of Time naming Adolf Hitler “Man of the Year” in 1938.
Additional reactions came from Fox News contributors and other social media users who noted the apparent contradiction in Time’s portrayal.
Platner is now the presumptive Democratic nominee after his opponent, Gov. Janet Mills, ended her campaign. If Platner wins the primary, he will face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a crucial race affecting Senate power balance.
