Robert O’Neill, a U.S. Navy SEAL known for his role in the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, has expressed his views on recent social media posts from Graham Platner, a Maine Democratic Senate candidate. These posts have sparked controversy.
“Mr. Platner was way out of line talking about a soldier that way,” O’Neill stated in response to a resurfaced Reddit post. Platner had criticized a wounded soldier seen in a viral video, using derogatory language. O’Neill condemned the remarks as barbaric.
O’Neill emphasized the importance of loyalty among soldiers, stating, “If you swear an oath to the country, it doesn’t even matter what the politics are. Every time you fight, it’s for the man next to you.”
Platner has attributed these posts to his struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but O’Neill sees this explanation as inadequate.
O’Neill commented, “PTSD shouldn’t do that to you, especially if you repeat such behavior.” He recommended Ibogaine therapy for Platner, highlighting personal experience with the treatment.
Platner has also faced criticism for comments about American Sniper Chris Kyle, suggesting Kyle inflated his kill count. O’Neill suggested jealousy might be behind such remarks due to Kyle’s fame.
O’Neill criticized Democrats for their silence on Platner’s resurfaced posts.
“You won’t hear from figures like Chuck Schumer or Elizabeth Warren because they prioritize votes,” O’Neill claimed. He accused them of overlooking the public’s interests.
Some supporters brushed off Platner’s comments as “locker room talk.” Despite acknowledging this context, O’Neill questioned Platner’s qualifications for the Senate.
“With a Nazi tattoo and wishing harm on soldiers, I don’t think he’s fit for the Senate,” O’Neill stated.
Despite the criticism, O’Neill acknowledged Platner’s struggles, hinting at the impact of alcohol on his behavior. O’Neill expressed a willingness to observe Platner’s future actions, valuing the possibility of forgiveness.
