Britney Spears DUI Arrest: Details and Plea

In March, Britney Spears had a notable encounter with the law when she was arrested for driving under the influence. The incident involved her refusal to exit her BMW for approximately 10 minutes, followed by her smelling of alcohol and showing signs of intoxication during field sobriety tests. The police report and dashcam video provide a detailed account.

According to the California Highway Patrol report, Spears displayed rapid and slurred speech, an unsteady gait, and finger movements suggesting fidgeting. Her mood shifted from confrontational and agitated to flamboyant and compliant, even attempting a British accent intermittently. Despite her claims of consuming only a mimosa hours earlier and asserting a zero level of drunkenness, breath tests recorded blood alcohol levels of .05 and .06, below California’s legal impairment threshold of .08.

Spears remarked to the officers, “I could probably drink four bottles of wine and take care of you, I’m an angel.”

An officer discovered a bottle of Adderall in her purse, a medication not prescribed to her. Additionally, she submitted a blood sample for drug testing, though results were not included in the report.

The arrest occurred on March 4 after Spears was stopped for speeding and swerving on U.S. 101 near the Los Angeles County line. Initially, Spears resisted exiting the car, citing past pranks and harassment as reasons, and expressed fear of stepping onto the highway. She proposed they visit her home instead, offering, “I’ll make you food or lasagna, whatever you want. I have a pool.”

Subsequently, Spears was handcuffed, transported to jail, and released on bail shortly after. She voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility soon after.

On May 4, Spears pled guilty to reckless driving involving alcohol and drugs, avoiding further jail time. Ventura County prosecutors explained that the plea deal aligns with standard offers for defendants without prior DUI incidents, accidents, injuries, and with low blood-alcohol levels.

Outside the courtroom, Spears’ attorney Michael Goldstein commented, “I don’t think anybody’s happy about pleading guilty to anything, but under the circumstances, to get this behind her, I think everybody is pleased with the result.”

Spears rose to fame in the 1990s and 2000s through platinum albums and hit singles like “Toxic,” “… Baby One More Time,” and “Oops! … I Did It Again.” Her personal life became tabloid fodder in the early 2000s as she faced public scrutiny and dealt with mental health issues. For nearly 14 years, Spears was under a conservatorship led by her father, which ended in 2021. Since then, she has married, divorced, and released her memoir, “The Woman in Me.”
