A 38-year-old man lost his life after a shark attack near Horseshoe Reef, close to Rottnest Island on Australia’s western coast. The tragic event occurred just before 10 a.m. on Saturday. Rottnest Island is situated roughly 19 miles west of Perth.
The victim was brought back to the shore but could not be revived. St. John WA Ambulance confirmed, “The man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when it is believed he was bitten by a shark.”
Authorities identified the shark as a great white, attacking the swimmer near the well-known tourist destination. Rescue crews transported the man to shore, where paramedics made efforts to save him without success.
This incident marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advised the public to exercise “additional caution” in the area, with reports indicating a great white shark was involved.
Footage from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation showed police on the scene with a boat and rescue personnel. Earlier this year, a 12-year-old succumbed to injuries a week after being attacked by a shark in Sydney Harbor. Within a similar time frame, three others encountered non-fatal shark attacks along the New South Wales coast.
