Senator John Kennedy, Republican from Louisiana, emphasized the significant influence of President Donald Trump on Republican politics. Kennedy pointed out how Trump’s endorsement transformed the Louisiana Senate race, unseating Senator Bill Cassidy.
“Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable,” Kennedy remarked during “The Sunday Briefing.” He noted that polls had indicated trouble for Cassidy for over a year; he believed Trump’s endorsement of Congresswoman Julia Letlow solidified the outcome. Despite this, Cassidy chose to run, which Kennedy respected.
Letlow and Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming surpassed Cassidy in the GOP primary. Letlow received about 45% of the vote, Fleming around 28%, while Cassidy came in third with just under 25%. As neither candidate reached 50%, Letlow will enter a runoff with Fleming. The winner will compete against the Democratic runoff victor in November.
Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump during the impeachment trial over five years ago, faced harsh criticism from Trump. Trump called Cassidy “a disloyal disaster” and “a sleazebag.” Following Cassidy’s defeat, Trump celebrated on social media, declaring Cassidy’s political career over.
In his concession speech, Cassidy subtly criticized Trump’s behavior. Cassidy acknowledged the unpredictability of democracy and expressed gratitude for his time as a representative, despite the outcome.
While Trump’s support bolstered Letlow’s performance, Kennedy noted additional factors affecting voter decisions. He highlighted voter dissatisfaction with the shift from open to closed primaries. Many voters experienced confusion during the election due to changes in the primary system.
President Trump’s endorsement had an undeniable impact, yet Kennedy deemed other elements crucial, acknowledging Cassidy’s prolonged political difficulties.
