Italian Divers Found Dead in Mauritius Underwater Cave

On Monday, Italy’s Foreign Ministry announced the discovery of four Italian divers inside an underwater cave in the Maldives. The divers had been missing for four days. Rescue efforts resumed after being halted due to the death of a local military diver during an earlier mission.

The bodies were located by three Finnish diving experts, with support from the Maldives police and military. Ahmed Shaam, a Maldives government spokesman, confirmed that the divers were found deep inside the cave, specifically in the third and largest segment. The recovery plan involved retrieving two bodies on Tuesday and the remainder the following day.

The four bodies were found in the third segment of the cave, which is the largest part.

Earlier, the body of a fifth Italian diver, a diving instructor, had been discovered outside the cave. The group, which included experts on a scientific mission, was exploring a cave at a depth of 160 feet. This depth exceeds the Maldives’ recreational diving limit of 98 feet.

The victims included Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, researcher Muriel Oddenino, and instructor Gianluca Benedetti, according to the Maldivian government. Benedetti’s body was found near the cave’s entrance.

The University of Genoa stated that Montefalcone and Oddenino were in the Maldives to monitor marine environments and study climate change effects. The fatal dive was not part of their official research activities.

Rough weather complicated the rescue missions, which initially marked the cave’s entrance. The cause of death is under investigation, and experts advise that cave diving involves high risks. It requires specialized skills due to its technical nature and potential hazards, such as poor visibility and getting disoriented inside caves.

Authorities labeled the incident as the worst diving accident in Maldives history. The Maldives consists of 1,192 coral islands in the Indian Ocean. While diving accidents are uncommon, some fatal events have been reported, including the deaths of a British tourist and a Japanese tourist in recent years.
