The region stretching from Scranton to Allentown in Pennsylvania holds significant political power due to its two swing districts. This area might decide control of the House, with many voters expressing deep economic concerns.

The Lehigh Valley, encompassing cities like Allentown, is becoming more diverse. Allentown once symbolized a declining industrial age but now boasts a boutique hotel, trendy coffee shops, and high-rise lofts. These changes stem from an economic boom driven by logistics, biotech, and high-tech manufacturing.

However, this growth has resulted in higher living costs, affecting the predominantly working-class residents. Brian Fasolino, a 28-year-old who returned to Jim Thorpe after six years in the military, shared his struggle. Despite securing a job installing piping systems, he cannot afford to move out of his parents’ home. Fasolino remarked, “I was kind of hoping that things didn’t change all that much, and boy was I wrong.”

Pennsylvania’s Seventh Congressional District, part of the state’s eastern area, is pivotal politically. The district is one of two in Pennsylvania that switched from Democrat to Republican in 2024. Democrats aim to win back the district with their candidate, Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter and union representative. Brooks believes his personal history will resonate with voters, as he has experienced economic hardship firsthand. “I think they can see themselves in me,” Brooks stated, recalling his own reliance on food stamps and public housing after his family’s home burned down.
