Early Voting Begins in Lake and Porter Counties

The election season in Lake County began early Tuesday morning, with Elections and Registration Director Michelle Fajman expressing optimism for the upcoming November general election. “I think many have learned over the years that as election day approaches, lines get longer,” she said. “So if you know your choice, come out and vote early”.

Michael and Marcia Foreman, residents of Valparaiso, inched forward in the line on the first day of early voting, which took place on October 6, 2026. The voting area at the Porter County Administration Building was bustling, with lines stretching out the door into the hall.

Sharing a bench with the Foremans was Rose Ross, also from Valparaiso. Michael Foreman emphasized the importance of making their voices heard by voting. Marcia Foreman noted that early voting is always more convenient. Ross agreed, saying she disliked standing in long lines, especially in cold weather, and wasn’t familiar with other voting center locations.

By 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Lake County had received 511 mail-in ballots. In contrast, 972 were received on the first day of early voting in 2022. By 4:15 p.m., 1,549 people had participated, not counting figures from Lowell Town Hall which were not yet available. “We’ve already surpassed half of what we did on the first day four years ago,” Fajman remarked, finding it promising.

Lake County has added an early voting day for Sunday, October 25. Fajman pointed out the significance of offering flexibility since not everyone can vote on Election Day due to work or travel. Voting on October 25 will occur at various locations, including the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point and others across the county.

In Porter County, early voting will continue until November 2, with different locations available, including the Chesterton Town Hall, Hebron Community Center, and Valparaiso Training Center.

Frank Baccino, 87, a Crown Point resident, shared his voting experience at the Lake County Government Center, noting the lack of long lines. Jaranata Sharp, another Crown Point resident, also appreciated the smooth voting process and emphasized the importance of voting for candidates focused on affordability.

Gwenell White Sandifer, 67, emphasized the necessity of voting to ensure representation and unity. Arnold Reyes, another voter, expressed his support for candidates addressing affordability and immigration policies.

Charlotte Sterling of Valparaiso shared her motivation to vote early, influenced by personal experiences with an elected official following a family tragedy. JoEllen Raby and Raymond Riddell, both Valparaiso residents, experienced minor issues but were ultimately able to vote.
