Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a severe ankle injury in Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Surprisingly, it took him a moment to register the damage.
During the fourth quarter at Allegiant Stadium, with the Chiefs trailing 19-17 and facing third-and-4 with 3:25 left, quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a deep pass down the left sideline. Thornton caught it for a 55-yard gain but was quickly tackled by Raiders safety Treydan Stukes, who landed on Thornton’s left ankle.
Initially holding onto the football, Thornton seemed poised to celebrate a critical play. However, upon standing, he noticed his left foot was in an unnatural position. Medical staff promptly applied an air cast and he was carted off, with the team later ruling him out due to an ankle injury. No further details were announced at the time of reporting.
Thornton, who became an integral part of the Chiefs’ lineup after joining their practice squad in November 2024, had recently shown promising performance. Last season, he recorded 19 catches for 438 yards and three touchdowns. This year, before his injury, he already amassed 108 receiving yards in two games. In this match, Thornton achieved his first 100-yard game with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs’ passing game was already hindered as Rashee Rice, another key receiver, exited in the first quarter due to a right hamstring injury.
Thornton’s significant 55-yard reception set up a go-ahead touchdown by Kenneth Walker, leading Kansas City to a narrow 30-27 victory, extending their record to 4-0.
