US Ambassador’s Criticism
The US ambassador to South Africa, L. Brent Bozell III, has publicly criticized South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Bozell stated, “You’ve got a president of South Africa who refuses to condemn an incitement to kill.”
This comment followed after he was summoned by South Africa’s foreign ministry for his ‘undiplomatic conduct’. It marks the third time in nine months that the ambassador has been officially reprimanded by Pretoria.
Previous Incidents and Diplomatic Tensions
Bozell’s criticism is in line with issues raised by President Trump, who has expressed concern over South Africa’s policies. These concerns include alleged racial discrimination, farmer murders, land seizures without compensation, and incitement to violence against minorities.
The ambassador described South Africa’s response to Trump’s five specific requests as lacking, with three being ignored. Among these is Trump’s demand for President Ramaphosa to halt the chant “Kill the Boer! Kill the farmer!” which a South African court has deemed permissible.
US and South Africa’s Economic Relations
In addition to political tensions, the ambassador discussed economic relations between the US and South Africa. The US aims for partnership in mining, particularly in rare earth minerals, contrary to China’s approach which involves extracting resources for its own gain.
However, South Africa’s policy requiring a 30% local black ownership in foreign firms poses a challenge. This requirement affects companies like SpaceX, which has pledged significant contributions to local schools contingent upon relaxed ownership regulations.
International Dynamics Affecting Relations
Bozell also expressed concern over South Africa’s strengthening ties with countries like Iran, Russia, and China. The US perceives this shift away from a non-aligned stance as problematic. This geopolitical realignment is closely monitored by the current US administration.
Nevertheless, the US seeks to maintain a beneficial partnership. Bozell emphasized the potential for job creation and technological advancement in South Africa through US investment.
Looking Ahead
Despite existing challenges, US authorities aspire to de-escalate tensions and find mutually beneficial solutions. An official from South Africa’s foreign ministry expressed a commitment to resolving outstanding issues in the relationship.
A State Department statement emphasized that future US-South Africa relations depend on South Africa’s responses to President Trump’s directives.
