Dan Fouts on the Dangers of Football and Recent Controversies

Dan Fouts, an Oregon legend, is familiar with the violent nature of football. During a recent game, the Oregon Ducks faced off against USC, where linebacker Desman Stephens made a dangerous late hit on quarterback Dante Moore. This incident drew widespread attention and health concerns for Moore, who had to be carted off the field.

Following this event, Fouts praised Oregon head coach Dan Lanning for his composed handling of the tense situation. Lanning gathered the team, offered a prayer for Moore, and helped the players refocus on the game. Fouts described this as a perfect way to address the circumstances.

“It’s a violent, violent game, and anybody who’s played the game has suffered injuries. That one obviously looked just terrible,” Fouts commented, highlighting the risks involved in football.

Stephens celebrated after the hit, an action Fouts chalked up to youthful impulsiveness. However, Stephens acknowledged the inappropriateness of his behavior, issuing an apology. He expressed regret and emphasized that his actions were not reflective of his character or USC’s standards.

USC suspended Stephens for an upcoming game against Washington. He conveyed his remorse and wished Moore a complete recovery.

Oregon’s head coach, Lanning, condemned the hit, labeling it “disgusting.” Moore’s return to play is uncertain as he remains under concussion protocol.

Dan Fouts has a storied history with Oregon, leading him to a successful NFL career with the San Diego Chargers. He retired after 15 seasons and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
