The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees often dominate discussions in Major League Baseball. Many fans voice their frustration at the prospect of these teams clinching yet another Commissioner’s Trophy. While a World Series featuring these teams would garner massive viewership and revenue, the excitement of watching underdog teams challenge formidable franchises holds a unique appeal.
The Chicago White Sox represent such an underdog presence in the current season. Recently, Bleacher Report highlighted reasons the White Sox deserve support in the upcoming American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians, beginning on Saturday. The report strikes a chord with fans whose teams have already been eliminated from the 2026 MLB season.
The video shared on social media by Bleacher Report introduces viewers to the White Sox, notorious for their past struggles. “If your team is already out and you need someone to root for in the postseason, let me introduce you to the Chicago White Sox,” it states. A notable image stands out, depicting Pope Leo XIV, originally from Chicago, donning a White Sox hat.
The White Sox’s recent history has been challenging, experiencing three consecutive 100-loss seasons, including a modern-era record of 121 losses in 2024. Despite this, they achieved a milestone by sweeping Houston for their first playoff win since their 2005 World Series victory. This comeback narrative has captivated fans, with their struggles old enough to resonate on platforms like TikTok.
While these achievements are notable, the Bleacher Report video emphasizes another crucial element: the team’s personalities. Munetaka Murakami’s viral moments in the clubhouse, pitcher Sean Burke’s famous remarks, and the involvement of Pope Leo, who sent a letter before their Wild Card games, have captured attention. The two, noted celebrations of the team reflect their unique character and have attracted new supporters eager to follow their journey.
As the team prepares to face the Cleveland Guardians, who narrowly claimed the top central standings, the Chicago White Sox serve as a compelling story in this playoff season.
