Jack Murphy Shines in Lincoln-Way East Victory

Lincoln-Way East celebrates the return of Junior receiver Jack Murphy. Known for his speed, Murphy faced a setback with a hamstring injury. He missed games, but he is back in the lineup for the Griffins. “I was out longer to ensure I could complete the regular season,” Murphy said. “And the playoffs.”

In his third game back, Murphy excelled on Friday night. He caught eight passes for 186 yards and scored two touchdowns in the first half. This contributed to Lincoln-Way East’s 42-0 victory over Lincoln-Way Central in the SouthWest Suburban Conference. This matchup was the first since spring 2021.

Quarterback Evan LeFevour recorded 240 passing yards. Backup QB Tyler Spychalski connected with Luke Ingram for a 61-yard pass in the fourth quarter. Running back Aidan Cavanaugh rushed for 51 yards and scored two touchdowns on 15 carries. On defense, Ontario Pryor had an interception and Jacob Onik and Cameren Stewart delivered important sacks. Together, they supported Murphy, who transformed short passes into touchdowns of 66 and 44 yards. “He’s great,” said LeFevour. “He’s skilled at gaining yards after the catch.”

Senior offensive lineman Mason Halliman praised Murphy, “He’s the best in the state.” Lincoln-Way Central’s Gavin Ciesiun threw for 103 yards. Justin Langford recovered a muffed punt, Nicholas Paczesny made a fumble recovery, and Alex Harper intercepted.

Murphy faced injury setbacks, playing previously with only four catches for 51 yards. The Griffins have another fast receiver in Jayden Cawthon. Murphy’s return brings additional speed to their offense. “He’s one of the fastest in the state,” said Lincoln-Way East coach Rob Zvonar. “With Jack back, we don’t have to depend on only one receiver.”

Murphy’s sprinting abilities began early, “My dad put me in speed training in sixth grade,” he said. “It’s been a big part of my life.” He acknowledged the offensive line, “I like to see the big boys clear the path. They deserve credit.”

After narrow victories over Brother Rice and Kankakee at the start of the season, the Griffins have dominated their conference, outscoring them 122-31. They aim for their first Class 8A title since 2019. Murphy recalls watching the 2019 team win, “I watched AJ Henning, now in the Dolphins organization, play.” This inspired Murphy to dive into football. “It’s my life now,” he said. “It brings peace and balance.”
