Tennessee’s athletic department decided to extend its ‘Happy Hour’ promotion for the rest of the 2026 football season. This decision followed the recent matchup where President Donald Trump attended the game against No. 1 Texas at Neyland Stadium.
The announcement was made with the understanding that significant security measures would increase traffic around the stadium due to the President’s visit. As a solution, the school opened the stadium gates an hour earlier at 9 a.m. ET to help fans bypass security lines, a problem in previous events attended by the President.
The game had a scheduled start time of 12 p.m. ET, resulting in early morning road traffic and parking activity around the stadium. Fans, many of whom experienced similar situations at past events, such as the CFP title game in Miami and Trump’s 2024 visit to Tuscaloosa, arrived well in advance.
The athletic department’s strategy included halving concession and alcohol prices from 9-10 a.m. ET. This move encouraged fans to arrive early and enjoy the pre-game atmosphere inside Neyland Stadium.
The results were positive. The promotion led to the largest crowd seen at the stadium two hours before kickoff. Fans actively took advantage of the discounted beverages, resulting in 95,000 units of alcohol sold throughout the game. The sales generated $1.3 million for the university. The first beer purchase occurred immediately at 9:02 a.m. ET, indicating eager participation.
The game concluded around 4 p.m. ET, with an impressive rate of 13,571 alcoholic beverages per hour sold inside the stadium.
Given the event’s success, Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White declared that the ‘Happy Hour’ promotion would continue for the remainder of the season. He expressed this decision on social media and encouraged continued early attendance by opening gates three hours before the game, with concessions discounted for the first hour.
The next game against Auburn will also see gates open three hours before the 3:30 p.m. ET start, showcasing consistent application of this popular strategy.
