Gov. Gavin Newsom Signs Legislation to Protect LGBTQ Rights in California

Gov. Gavin Newsom approved a series of bills on a recent Saturday to enhance protections for LGBTQ individuals in California. These measures come as a response to recent federal policies under the Trump administration perceived as threatening these supports.

Support for Discharged Service Members

Among the six bills, one aims to assist service members dismissed from the U.S. military due to efforts to ban transgender individuals from serving. This legislation will offer housing, employment, and additional support. Assemblymember Chris Ward (D-San Diego) expressed gratitude for the signing of Assembly Bill 1775, highlighting California’s stance with veterans unfairly removed from service.

Privacy and Healthcare Protections

Additional bills focus on privacy enhancements, restricting the sharing of sexual orientation and gender identity information. They also mandate healthcare providers to alert the California attorney general upon receiving subpoenas concerning protected healthcare activities.

Access to HIV Preventative Medication

New laws also aim to improve accessibility to PrEP and PEP, drugs that play a critical role in HIV prevention.

“The Trump administration has launched an all-out assault on the LGBTQ community,” Newsom’s office stated. “California will not stand for it.”

The legislation signed was prioritized by the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, demonstrating ongoing efforts to uphold LGBTQ rights.

Historical Support for LGBTQ Legislations

Since his inauguration in 2019, Newsom has approved numerous bills advocating LGBTQ protections. This year’s budget allocates $66 million specifically for gender-affirming care and abortion access.

State Sen. Sabrina Cervantes (D-Riverside), soon-to-be chair of the LGBTQ Caucus, emphasized the collaborative achievements made possible by working towards a California where LGBTQ families thrive with safety and opportunity. The senator expressed pride in the Caucus’s accomplishments and appreciation for Governor Newsom’s commitment to signing these significant measures.
