White Sox Fall to Rockies, Focus on Playoffs Ahead

Davis Martin reacted quickly to cover first base on Jake McCarthy’s grounder. However, a throw from first baseman Munetaka Murakami slipped from his grasp, allowing the game’s first batter to reach base due to an error. This misstep set a troubling tone for the Chicago White Sox, as Martin failed to complete the first inning in a 9-6 defeat to the Colorado Rockies at Rate Field, witnessed by 31,938 fans.

With this loss, the White Sox’s chase for the American League Central title came to an end when the Cleveland Guardians secured an 11-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals. The Sox secured the No. 6 seed in the playoffs and will face either the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros in an away series. This best-of-three American League wild-card series will commence on Tuesday.

Manager Will Venable expressed his mixed feelings, stating, “Obviously, we didn’t win the division, which is disappointing. Yet, we’re incredibly proud of the team as we head into the playoffs.” Despite not securing the division, Venable focused on the positives at hand.

The Guardians, capturing the division title again, now hold the AL’s No. 2 seed. Their manager acknowledged their rivals: “You’ve got to give them some credit. They earned the division, and they are a formidable team,” Venable admitted.

The Sox were unable to recover from the early setback on Saturday. Martin’s performance allowed three runs, with two being earned, in a brief outing that saw him face seven batters and record just two outs.

Following Martin’s error, Cole Carrigg singled, and Hunter Goodman was struck out. However, an RBI single by TJ Rumfield widened the gap. Martin walked Connor Norby, loading the bases for Adael Amador, whose sharply hit single brought in two more runs, taking the Rockies to a 3-0 lead.

Brenton Doyle’s second-inning home run cut the Sox’s deficit to 3-1. In the third inning, both teams exchanged solo homers, maintaining the gap. Ezequiel Tovar’s fourth-inning home run restored Colorado’s three-run lead.

The White Sox came close several times but couldn’t capitalize on these chances. Randal Grichuk and Colson Montgomery couldn’t bring runners in during crucial moments in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. Although they scored in the seventh, the opportunity was missed when Murakami’s deep flyout concluded the inning.

The eighth inning brought hope when Chase Meidroth’s double and Kyle Teel’s single placed two runners on base. Unfortunately, they couldn’t advance, as Antonacci struck out, and Montgomery hit into a double play.

I think we’re a couple big knocks short of putting a couple across there. But I like the competitive spirit of the group.

In the ninth, the Rockies extended their lead to 9-3 with Goodman’s home run. Despite Andrew Benintendi’s three-run homer in the bottom of the inning, the comeback fell short.

Third baseman Miguel Vargas remarked on their situation, “We want to win the division, of course, but that’s not in our hands anymore. Our focus now shifts to upcoming challenges.”

The White Sox wrap up their regular season on Sunday. As Chase Meidroth stated, “There are tough games all year. We regroup and look forward to the wild-card.”
