Thrift Store Surprise: Hidden Cash and Unexpected Finds

A Surprising Discovery

A Milwaukee mother of seven stumbled upon an unexpected payday when browsing a local thrift store. Bonnie Mata, 41, who is raising 18-month-old twins alongside her five grown children, experienced the growing popularity of thrift shopping firsthand. In 2024, Savers Value Village, Inc., a major thrift store operator, reported that nearly 90% of North American consumers had interacted with thrift stores. This represented an increase from 83% in 2022. Despite general retail trends, in-person thrift shopping remains favored, with consumers spending 4.5 times more at physical stores compared to online platforms. People spend 77 cents of every dollar on pre-owned apparel in-store.

The Wallet with a Secret

During one of her visits to a Milwaukee thrift store, Mata found a snakeskin wallet that caught her eye. Initially hesitant, she decided to purchase it after noticing its handmade quality and excellent condition. Days later, she looked closer at the wallet to assess its worth for possible resale on eBay. That is when she felt something resembling paper tucked into a slot.

Mata recalled her friend’s advice to check secondhand items for money, though she rarely found anything. However, this wallet contained a surprise—a hundred-dollar bill from 1985, the year she was born. Despite wanting to keep the bill as a keepsake, her financial situation meant she spent it instead.

Unexpected Finds at Thrift Stores

Reyne Hirsch, an Antiques Roadshow appraiser, noted that discovering money in thrift purchases is common due to past habits of hiding cash during uncertain times, such as the Depression Era. Hirsch explained how valuable items are often overlooked during estate property clearances. Clothing and books bundled for donation may contain hidden surprises that are never checked.

According to Hirsch, when such discoveries involve significant sums, contacting the store for potential tracking might be worthwhile. Otherwise, the adage “finders keepers” often applies.
