DHS to Enhance Redaction Process with New Technology

The Department of Homeland Security plans to enhance its redaction processes by implementing advanced technology. This initiative aims to improve how the agency manages the redaction of public records.

Redactions are a common source of frustration for individuals requesting information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Requesters often encounter blacked-out sections that obscure extensive portions of text when the government provides access to documents.

Even those who strongly support transparency concede that certain details, like Social Security numbers, must remain confidential. However, the consensus among many is that the government frequently overuses redactions, concealing more information than necessary.
