Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham recently addressed the misleading narratives that followed her comments about teammates Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell. With the Fever experiencing a successful season and securing a postseason spot, both Clark and Mitchell have become contenders for the WNBA Most Valuable Player Award. Cunningham voiced her support for both teammates on her newly launched podcast, “No Hesitation,” alongside trainer Drew Hanlan.
During this week’s episode, Hanlan explained the reaction to a clip from the previous episode, which showed Cunningham praising Mitchell. He noted receiving numerous comments from individuals angered by Cunningham, believing she was undermining Caitlin Clark. Cunningham stated, “I just think it’s crazy because I have two great players on my team, and I’m gonna hype both of them up.” She expressed her support for both players, emphasizing the selective nature of internet clips.
Cunningham criticized the portrayal of her as disinterested in supporting Clark and Aliyah Boston during the FIBA World Cup Finals against France. She clarified her involvement in a NASCAR promotion prevented her from watching the game. The 30-year-old WNBA star, known for her outspoken nature, has gained popularity since joining Clark and the Fever due to her willingness to voice her opinions on various topics.
Cunningham’s podcast with Hanlan aims to address media narratives and fan-driven viral content. Despite ongoing discussions about the MVP race, Clark and Mitchell are not leading contenders. Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson is favored to win the award for the fifth time, followed by Minnesota Lynx rookie Olivia Miles.
The Indiana Fever will resume their regular-season schedule with an upcoming game against the Toronto Tempo at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday night.
