Secretary Marco Rubio Critiques NATO’s Role Amid Middle East Tensions

President Trump’s Address to the UN and Rubio’s Insights

President Donald Trump’s upcoming address at the United Nations General Assembly is highly anticipated. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discusses global issues on ‘Fox & Friends’ with a focus on Iran’s leadership and upcoming diplomatic engagements.

Rubio Questions NATO’s Functioning

Marco Rubio challenged the current utility of NATO, following restrictions by some allies on U.S. military use of their bases during a conflict with Iran. These actions prompt Rubio to question the strategic value of the alliance.

“We had a couple countries say, ‘You can’t use your base here.’ Well, that’s absurd,” Rubio remarked. “If we can’t use our base when we have a contingency, what’s the point of having the base and, frankly, the point of the alliance?”

Historical Importance of NATO Bases

Rubio, a steadfast advocate for NATO, emphasized that the network of bases across Europe has provided the U.S. with significant strategic advantages. These bases enable American forces to project their influence and capability worldwide.

“I’ve been a strong supporter of NATO my entire career,” Rubio affirmed, underscoring that NATO bases have been crucial for U.S. global power projection.

Challenges and Disappointments with NATO

During recent conflicts, certain NATO allies restricted U.S. military access. For example, Italy refused landing rights for U.S. bombers at Naval Air Station Sigonella. A report also noted Spain closed its airspace to U.S. planes, while France limited military flights to Israel.

Rubio acknowledged varying levels of NATO ally support, stating some nations contributed more than others. However, he expressed hope that resistance from NATO members has diminished lately, noting improved cooperation despite ongoing disappointments.
