Chicago experienced its rainiest September weekend in seven years, with more rain expected in the coming days, according to weather officials. Gino Izzi, a senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service, stated that Monday’s weather would likely be ‘drizzly.’ Rainfall at O’Hare International Airport was the most for any two-day period in September since 2019, with 0.86 inches falling on Saturday and 1.21 inches on Sunday.
Izzi noted that Tuesday would begin with cloudy skies, gradually clearing as the day progresses. Sunday’s heavy rainfall disrupted several events, including the cancellation of an open-water swim in the Chicago River and bringing the McCook Reservoir in the southwest suburbs to 95% capacity.
The weekend weather also affected Riot Fest, forcing an early closure on Saturday night and delaying its reopening until Sunday afternoon. Festival-goers had to navigate the muddy conditions blanketing Douglass Park, often wearing ponchos.
On Monday morning, conditions at Midway Airport were 59 degrees and overcast. Meanwhile, O’Hare Airport reported an overcast sky with temperatures at 62 degrees.
