Boston Red Sox rookie Payton Tolle delivered an exceptional performance against the Kansas City Royals, highlighted by an immaculate inning. During the rain-delayed start on Sunday, Tolle retired the top of the Royals’ lineup using just nine pitches at Fenway Park. The left-hander, known for his distinctive mustache, utilized eight four-seam fastballs and a single sinker to achieve this.
Before executing the ninth pitch, Tolle glanced confidently towards home plate, aware of his impending milestone. He successfully struck out Jac Caglianone, securing an immaculate inning. This accomplishment marked the 125th in MLB history and only the eighth for the Red Sox since 1901. Tolle followed in the footsteps of Chris Sale, who achieved this feat in 2021, and was the first to do so in the game’s opening inning since Pedro Martinez in May 2002 against Seattle.
Tolle concluded the game with a performance of six shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven across 96 pitches. His efforts helped the Red Sox clinch a 4-1 victory. Adding to his growing tally, Tolle’s seven strikeouts raised his rookie season total to 166, second only to Daisuke Matsuzaka’s 201 strikeouts in 2007 for Red Sox rookies.
Just a day prior, Tolle expressed his views on pitch count restrictions, aligning himself with a more traditional approach. He stated, “I grew up thinking that a starter needs to go as long as possible every time … every time I go out there, I want to throw a complete game.” With the Red Sox vying for a spot in the American League wild-card race, having a determined rookie eager to pitch deep into games is significantly valuable.
