President Donald Trump has expressed his endorsement for Darren Bailey in the governor’s race, impacting Bailey’s strategy to distance himself from Trump, who is unpopular in Illinois. Trump’s support played a role in Bailey’s loss to Democrat JB Pritzker in 2022.
Trump confirmed his endorsement while leaving Ireland, after attending diplomatic meetings and the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament at his resort in County Clare. He described Bailey as a “good man,” recalling Bailey’s personal loss of his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren in a helicopter crash in Montana last October. Trump offered condolences and encouraged Bailey to “Fight! Fight! Fight!” in honor of his family while making his decision to run in the GOP primary for governor.
Trump backed Bailey in 2022, leading to a significant defeat by Pritzker, who is a prominent critic of Trump. Trump labeled Pritzker as a “disaster” governor, citing crime issues in Illinois and questioning why Democrats continue to win there. Pritzker, seeking a third term, is also contemplating a 2028 presidential run.
Bailey is aiming for governor again, emphasizing state issues to appeal to Democratic-leaning suburban voters, distancing his campaign from Trump’s association. However, Bailey acknowledges Trump’s endorsement, stating, “Donald Trump has nothing to do with me running for governor.” He focuses on criticizing Pritzker’s governance over the past eight years.
Bailey won’t reject Trump’s endorsement, evidenced by his presence at the midterm Republican National Convention, referred to as “Trumpapalooza,” and seen in the “President’s Box” in a photo shared by Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bost. Previously, Bailey attempted and failed to unseat Bost, with Trump supporting Bost in that race.
Trump’s endorsement coincides with Pritzker TV ads showing Bailey’s past pro-Trump comments, including his proud support. Bailey called Trump “a smart man” and thanked God for him. Pritzker campaign spokesperson Leah Hurwitz stated that Trump’s endorsement isn’t surprising due to Bailey’s admiration for Trump.
She criticized Bailey for supporting Trump’s tariffs, federal agent actions, and promising a welcome for Trump. Trump plans a rare visit to Illinois at the month’s end for the Presidents Cup golf tournament at Medinah Country Club. It’s unclear if Trump will campaign for Bailey during his visit.
