Chief Justice Roberts Praises Outgoing Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts commended Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch following his decision to retire. Bunch faced criticism from President Donald Trump’s administration, particularly over how U.S. history was portrayed at the Smithsonian.

In July, the Trump administration released a report critical of the National Museum of American History. As chancellor of the Smithsonian, Roberts applauded Bunch, stating that he “pursued excellence in the telling of our nation’s story” and that the institution had greatly benefited from Bunch’s leadership and vision.

Lonnie Bunch, 73, had been subject to tension with the White House for over a year regarding the presentation of American history. A July report from the administration accused the Smithsonian of being influenced by an “activist ideology” contrary to traditional narratives.

Bunch countered these claims internally, acknowledging areas for improvement yet disputing the report’s characterization of the museum’s contributions. He emphasized the Smithsonian’s dedication to scholarship, accuracy, and telling America’s complete story in an internal communication to staff.

Before his retirement, Bunch faced increased administration pressure, highlighted by warnings from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley. They signaled potential risks to the Smithsonian’s access to federal grants and artifacts unless changes were made within its leadership.

Burgum and Haley expressed these concerns in a letter to Congress, mentioning possible breaches of Federal antidiscrimination laws and a troubling institutional culture within the Smithsonian leadership.

Coverage by reporter Anders Hagstrom with Fox News Digital sheds light on these national political dynamics.
