Oswego Rejects Efforts to Rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’

Oswego, a city located in New York alongside Lake Ontario, has announced its dissent against President Donald Trump’s attempt to alter the lake’s name to ‘Lake America.’ This decision comes from a county known for its support of Trump in the 2024 elections.

In the wake of unsuccessful trade negotiations with Canada, President Trump suggested the name change, indicating a diminished interest in future dealings with Ontario. Last week, Trump executed an official directive prompting the Interior Department to revise the lake’s designation in U.S. geographic records.

Polls indicate widespread disapproval among Americans concerning the proposed name change.

Oswego, which endorsed Trump with 62% of its vote in the presidential election against 38% for his opponent, also appears to be largely opposed. City lawmakers and residents have voiced their displeasure with the plan.

During the week, Oswego’s Mayor, Robert Corradino, a Republican, delivered a statement opposing Trump’s executive mandate and seeing no justification for renaming the lake. ‘Lake Ontario has carried its name for hundreds of years,’ the statement asserted, highlighting its historical and geographical significance.

In addition, the Oswego County Legislature, comprising members from both Republican and Democrat parties, advanced a resolution refuting the ‘Lake America’ name change. The resolution emphasized the established historical and geographic importance of Lake Ontario and anticipated considerable expenses for taxpayers and businesses if the renaming proceeded.

This situation remains dynamic. Further updates are expected.
