After a challenging 2025 season for Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown, the Philadelphia Eagles traded Brown to the New England Patriots for future draft picks. This major move followed signs of a strained friendship between Hurts, the Eagles’ quarterback, and Brown, their star receiver.
Over two months since Brown’s transfer to New England, discussions about his relationship with Hurts persist. During joint practices between the Patriots and the Eagles, Brown answered ‘no’ when asked if he had spoken with Hurts post-trade.
Hurts has mostly avoided speaking about his relationship with Brown but addressed it during a GQ interview. He acknowledged the change, admitting the relationship had shifted. “There’s no surprise that it was talked about,” Hurts remarked.
A.J. Brown later explained on the “7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony” podcast that their estrangement wasn’t due to any single incident. “Nothing happened, people just grow apart,” he explained. Brown emphasized that nothing happened between their families or relationships.
The two briefly interacted during the second Patriots-Eagles joint practice. “Honestly, guys, none of that stuff even matters,” Brown told reporters, urging them to focus on positive stories.
Hurts shared a similar sentiment, stating, “I’ve got a lot of love for him and always have.” Brown holds the Eagles’ record for the top two single-season receiving yardage totals.
The Eagles were ousted from the playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers this past January. Brown reportedly felt his role was undervalued when not targeted enough against zone coverage, according to sources.
Despite previous frustrations, Brown expressed appreciation for his time with the Eagles, where he won a Super Bowl ring. “I love Philly and will always love Philly, but I’m here now,” he stated, refocusing on the upcoming season.
Hurts and Brown’s relationship extends back to before their NFL careers. Hurts once hosted Brown on a recruiting visit to Alabama, strengthening their bond during offseasons. Hurts even became godfather to Brown’s daughter, Jersee.
The Eagles will face the Washington Commanders in their home opener on September 13. The Patriots begin their season against the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning Super Bowl champions, on September 9.
