Flooding Devastation in Nepal: Rising Death Toll and Missing Persons

The recent flooding in Nepal has reached catastrophic levels, with the death toll climbing to 903, according to officials on Monday. The number of individuals reported missing has surged to 4,247, including 592 foreign nationals. The Nepal National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority released these figures in an update early Monday.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott noted that approximately 85 Americans remain unaccounted for. Rescue teams face significant challenges in accessing the affected areas days after the flooding began, which was triggered by a glacier collapse at the Nepal-Tibet border last Wednesday.

Ferrin Cole, Operations Director at Crisis Response International, remarked on the overwhelming scale of the disaster to NBC News, stating, “The flood that came down that mountain just wiped out cities. We’re going in as fast as we can to get people the help that they need.” The Nepal Red Cross reported that over 90,000 people have been impacted by the disaster.

In Chitwan district, morgues are overwhelmed, with a police officer indicating that “more than half” of the bodies recovered are “beyond recognition.” China has recorded separate figures, with 16 fatalities and 546 missing individuals in its Tibet region, including hundreds of foreigners. The overlap between Chinese and Nepali missing-person counts is not yet clear.

Nepali officials report that more than 10,400 people have been rescued, including 277 foreign nationals. The situation is complicated by a landslide-dammed lake above the border checkpoint, which is overflowing. China’s state media, CCTV, stated the breach probability is “relatively low.” Heavy rain in Nepal continues to raise river levels, prompting new warnings for residents near waterways.
