William Jewell College Mourns the Loss of Running Back MichahJo Barnett

MichahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, passed away on Saturday after a medical emergency during the team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College. The incident occurred in Liberty, Missouri, leaving the community in shock and sorrow.

A spokesperson from William Jewell College communicated to Newsweek that they were unaware of any pre-existing conditions that would have prevented Barnett from participating in the game. The nature and cause of the medical emergency remain undisclosed.

The college conveyed their condolences through a post on X, expressing their sympathy to Barnett’s family, teammates, friends, and coaches. In tribute to Barnett, a vigil was arranged to be held on campus Saturday night.

The medical emergency transpired on the sidelines during the first quarter. The game was initially suspended and ultimately canceled as medical staff attended to Barnett. The cause of the emergency is yet unclear.

Barnett was a junior pursuing a degree in business administration and had become a key player in William Jewell’s football program. A resident of the Kansas City area and an alumnus of Liberty North High School, he contributed to leading his high school team to a Missouri state championship before continuing his academic and athletic pursuits at William Jewell.

The world lost a great person today! MichahJo was the ultimate human. He always put his teammates before himself and brought out the best in everyone around him. Life’s fragility and preciousness become evident in times like this. Cherish and express love to those around you,

Former college football coach and Missouri Football Coach Hall of Famer Greg Jones shared on X.

The tragic event marred what had started as a promising day for the Cardinals and Barnett personally. He had scored a touchdown in the game before his medical crisis. Those present described a somber atmosphere as players, coaches, and supporters processed the tragedy. Emergency responders transported Barnett to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On the field, Barnett had become a standout talent for the Cardinals. As a freshman, he participated in eight games and emerged as the team’s leading rusher in the 2025 season, even after an injury-shortened year. He logged 366 yards and four touchdowns, featuring a remarkable performance against Kentucky Wesleyan with 150 yards and three touchdowns. His academic achievements also shone, earning him Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference recognition.

William Jewell’s football team is set to play on September 12 in an away game against Kentucky Wesleyan College.
