Tennessee Governor Proposes Renaming Nashville Airport for Dolly Parton

The Nashville International Airport might soon bear the name of Dolly Parton, according to a proposal announced by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. The proposal comes shortly after the passing of the beloved country music icon, who died of cancer at the age of 80. The governor stated, “At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”

Governor Lee has already discussed this idea with Parton’s representatives. The move aligns with the wishes of more than 157,000 fans who have signed an online petition advocating for the name change. Although the petition has existed for over a year, a surge in signatures occurred following Parton’s passing. The campaign has received support from Tennessee state Rep. Todd Warner and singer Sheryl Crow.

Nashville International Airport is already steeped in country music culture, featuring the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Grand Ole Opry outposts, and live performances. Naming airports after notable figures is a common practice in the U.S., with examples including Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky, and John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California.

Dolly Parton’s journey is inspirational; born into poverty in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, she became an influential figure whose appeal transcended various boundaries. Her successful career includes classic songs like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” alongside film roles in “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.”

To proceed with the name change, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority may need to revise its naming policy. The current regulation requires that airport properties be named after individuals deceased for at least two years. The proposal and the naming policy are scheduled to be discussed by the airport authority at their meeting on September 17.

Other tributes to Parton in Tennessee include legislation introduced by Tennessee state Sen. Jessie Seal to designate September 25 as “9 to 5” Day, celebrating Parton’s famous song.
