The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana has expanded its capacity by acquiring a new 15,000-square-foot facility adjacent to its existing location on Broadway. This $2 million investment increases their food storage ability from 204 pallets to 750 pallets, according to President and CEO Victor Garcia. This expansion is critical for the nonprofit, which moved a record 11.4 million pounds of food last year—though the region’s need is around 20 million pounds annually.
At a ‘Bread Breaking Ceremony,’ the new acquisition located at 6510 Broadway in Merrillville was celebrated. This enlarged campus ensures future expansion opportunities if required, Garcia added. Strack & Van Til President and CEO Jeff Strack, a member of the Food Bank’s board, played a key role by identifying and helping secure the cold storage warehouse.
Feeding America CEO Denis McDonough praised Garcia for innovations and investments focusing on community needs, especially amidst federal food aid reductions. McDonough highlighted the importance of the new infrastructure in enhancing resilience, especially during emergencies such as the recent derecho.
Other local leaders also participated in the ceremony, emphasizing community solidarity and continual efforts to meet growing demands. The Food Bank’s existing freezer will convert to refrigerated storage following the facility purchase, enhancing its ability to store diverse food types.
U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan highlighted the community’s resilience in the face of natural challenges, promising ongoing advocacy for federal food assistance. Garcia acknowledged the vital role of various organizations working tirelessly against hunger.
