Aisha Wahab Wins Special Election in California’s 14th District

Democratic state Senator Aisha Wahab has emerged victorious in the special election for California’s 14th District, according to NBC News projections. She will serve the remainder of former Representative Eric Swalwell’s term. Swalwell resigned from Congress in April following allegations of sexual assault, which he denies.

Wahab defeated Melissa Hernandez, a fellow Democrat and a member of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board of Directors, in this special election. The contest between Wahab and Hernandez followed a primary on June 16 where neither candidate secured a majority vote. Hernandez’s campaign received a late influx of external funding, yet it wasn’t enough to secure her a win.

In the initial primary, Wahab garnered 43% of the votes compared to Hernandez’s 17%. However, the election on Tuesday was significantly closer, with Wahab leading 53% to Hernandez’s 47%, with 95% of the expected votes counted.

The final weeks of the race saw a substantial financial influence from a super PAC linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which spent around $2.5 million against Wahab. Wahab had criticized Israel’s actions in the Gaza conflict, branding them as genocide. Her campaign website condemned AIPAC-linked PACs for their attempts to undermine her election bid. Hernandez was the only candidate who refrained from affirming the accusation of genocide regarding Israel at a forum in April.

This election represents another instance where AIPAC’s financial efforts have shaped political races. While some candidates supported by AIPAC-managed funds have won significant victories in states like Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland, others have faced defeat in high-profile contests. Notably, United Democracy Project, an AIPAC-linked super PAC, spent over $30 million to promote Democratic Representative Haley Stevens, who eventually lost her Senate primary to former public health official Abdul El-Sayed.
