Over 70 volunteers came together at Haven Hollow Park in Portage Township, ready to support residents affected by a severe storm on August 11, 2026. These volunteers brought essential supplies like tarps, bottled water, hygiene products, and food for those left without power after the storm.
South Haven Lions Club member Pat Greek was among those helping, engaging with residents like Patti Burton to provide hot meals and other necessities. The recovery event, organized by the Portage Township Trustee’s Office, aimed to assist families impacted by the storm’s 99 mph winds, heavy rains, and damage.
According to NIPSCO’s website, power should be restored to Portage and Gary by August 25. As cars lined up at Haven Hollow, Portage Township Trustee Brendan Clancy encouraged volunteers to begin the distribution. Within two hours, they helped around 230 families, loading cars with supplies. Clancy shared that many volunteers were also without power as they worked together.
Residents faced challenges like blocked driveways and the need to keep medical devices running. Within a day of the storm, the Bonner Senior Center transformed into an emergency shelter, serving over 570 meals and providing 152 overnight stays. Community support played a crucial role in the recovery event as well.
The community’s response was robust. Clancy highlighted a collaborative spirit beyond government efforts. Patti Burton, a retiree, picked up various items, emphasizing the kindness she’s experienced during the recovery. Her home was flooded, prompting her to use a generator, though it incurred significant fuel costs.
Volunteers like Kirt Raisor from the American Legion Post 502 also contributed, delivering supplies to those unable to reach the park. Ruben Mendez, another Legion member, focused on distributing meals and noted food shortages as a significant concern for those without power.
Kayla Chavez walked to the event with her young daughters, grateful for the support as their power had only recently returned. Despite the challenges, she felt fortunate compared to others.
