Addressing the Skilled Technician Shortage in the U.S. Economy

Imagine a scenario where technicians fail to show up for work. Flights remain grounded due to unsolved maintenance problems. Cars stay in workshops for weeks despite having the necessary tools. Factory lines halt, affecting the supply chain and delaying package deliveries. Data centers overheat and fire trucks fail to start. This is the direction in which the U.S. economy is heading due to a severe shortage of skilled technical talent.

The United States faces a shortage of skilled technicians across 10 critical sectors, including automotive, aviation, and HVAC. The industry can meet only 42% of the total demand. This shortage results in a $7.42 billion drain in wage-based economic output annually. Despite increased interest and support for skilled trades, the technician shortage persists.

Challenges in Recognizing Technicians

Americans often associate skilled labor with construction workers or plumbers, while technicians such as automotive, aircraft, or HVAC specialists remain unseen. The Bureau of Labor Statistics records nearly 6 million workers in maintenance and repair roles, excluding welders and self-employed individuals. When accounting for the entire ecosystem, the technician workforce numbers about 7 million, collectively earning over $375 billion annually. However, this workforce is fragmented across occupational codes, obscuring its true size and economic impact.

The scattered categorization makes this essential workforce invisible. When viewed separately, shortages appear as isolated issues affecting individual industries. Together, they highlight a broader, economy-wide shortage.

Investment and Strategic Importance

Major companies like Ford, Carrier, and Snap-on invest in scholarships and training to support the next generation of technicians. Yet, the shortage remains critical. The push for domestic manufacturing, AI data centers, and rebuilding the defense base underscores the strategic importance of technicians. Carolyn Lee, president of the Manufacturing Institute, emphasizes the shortfall of 1.9 million manufacturing workers by 2033 as both an economic and national security issue.

Building Visibility and Pathways

Recognizing the technician workforce requires changes in labor data categorization. Policymakers and funders need to understand the full demand and economic value of technicians. Workforce dollars, scholarships, apprenticeships, and education must reach professions like automotive, HVAC, and industrial machinery technicians.

Companies investing in manufacturing, AI, energy, transportation, and defense should consider the technician pipeline an essential part of their investments. Technicians are crucial for maintaining new factories, data centers, fleets, and advanced machinery.

Technicians support America’s economy significantly. Investing in them can strengthen communities, revive the middle class, and secure the country’s future. Technologies require maintenance. Planes, servers, wind turbines, robots, MRI machines, and delivery trucks all need skilled technicians.
